West Kent Sunday League News Report – Sunday 27th February 2022

This week saw the demise of Green Lane FC. Members since 2007, they have been beset by a number of problems and reluctantly resigned. They had played all their matches in the Division 1 / 2 mix phase, the results of which will be retained when the re-set Divisions 1 and 2 start next week. Their place in the Senior Cup is taken by TW Ridgewaye.

WKSFL Senior Cup

The First Round is now all under way. In Group One it took two penalties for AFC Valour to overcome Odukwe. They were scored by Tony Revell and Aaron Holmes. I do not have the Odukwe goalscorer.

In group 2, Simla are almost certain of a place in the quarter-finals after beating Paddock Wood 2-0, both goals being scored by Luke Leppard. In the other game, Goudhurst United won for the first time after three successive defeats, beating Insulators 4-2. Scorers were Mick Peevor (2), Tom Sayer and James Murphy. Tommy Sceal hit both for Insulators, who now have played eleven times since their last win, which was against Goudhurst way back on 17th October last year.

Pembury Sunday top Group 3 following a -0 win at AFC Borough. Steve Harper scored twice and the other came from Scott Moran. Toby Forward kept his eighth clean sheet of the season and is the League's leading performer between the posts.

Dormansland Rockets need now just a draw from their game next week against AFC Borough to go through to the quarter.finals. Dormansland recovered from conceding within the first thirty seconds of their game against Charcott, having not even had a touch of the ball, to win 4-3. Dave Heaton got the equaliser before a Rich Wetton brace and an own goal gave the Rockets a 4-1 lead. Charcott showed good fighting spirit to pull it back to 4-3, but Dormansland held on for the win. Top spot could still depend on the outcome of their final group game on 20th March against Pembury Sunday.

Division Three

The title race is hotting up. All the top six won on Sunday, except Sedlescombe Ranges, whose game at Ticehurst was called off. The fixtures mostly pitched top against bottom and the form book prevailed.

Insulators Reserves lead the way after a 3-2 win at home to AFC Borough Reserves. Their goals came from Nik Weedon, an own goal and Josh Heinricci. Oscar Harrison has been a prolific scorer this season for Borough's reserves. He scored once, Chris Hutchins the second.

Second placed Brenchley did not have it all their own way against Riverside Colts, but eventually came off 5-2 winners with Mike Williams scoring a hat-trick. In addition,  Conor Williams scored twice.

Artois United Reserves are back in high scoring mode, thrashing Dunton Green 9-1 at Tonbridge Farm. The Division's leading scorer Ollie Sugden scored four, Finley Crowhurst two and there was one each for Rhys Newton, Kane Crowhurst and Duncan Ibbotson.

Royal Oak hit Speldhurst Rangers hard in an eight -nil win, with Ash Bell scoring five.  Tom Radford, Neil Walker and  Dan Lazell were also on the scoresheet. Speldhurst's organisational skills were lacking as they tried to sneak on a 12th player during the second half. Apparently this is because they enjoy a beer after the game. Dan 'the badger' Kelly missed a penalty for Rangers. A 12mph south westerly breeze deceived Baldwin as he shouted 'keepers' from a corner for the ball to take the leather off his Adidas glove into the back of the net to sum up Speldhurst's day. That's now seven defeats on the trot for Speldhurst, who are sliding down the table after a reasonable first ten games. Royal Oak on the other hand have lost only once in their last nine in all competitions.

Next Sunday Royal Oak will be playing their Kent Sunday Junior Trophy semi-final, away at Hatcham Beckenham Manor FC in Chislehurst.  Fingers crossed for a place in the Final.

In sixth place, TW Ridgewaye Reserves are also on the march. For them it's now eight games since their last defeat. Success on Sunday was a  5-0 beating of Westerham, thanks to Dan Thomas 2, Tyler Markwell, Harry Demmon and Billy McLeod.

Two of the teams at the lower end of the table, Tonbridge United and AFC Tonbridge met in a local derby.  The result was a 3-3 draw. Harry Bamblett, Sean Longman and  Elliott Malthouse scored for United, Matt Tomlin, Matt Thorpe and Oren Morris for AFC Tonbridge. The latter are now obviously in a more suitable place for some competitive football!
