West Kent Sunday League News Report –
26th September 2021
Plenty of action on Sunday and some interesting results. There was a
Management Committee meeting on Monday evening. Decisions were made
concerning several unplayed fixtures in both Divisions. The tables
below include any adjustments made. The full list of decisions can
be seen here.
Division One / Two
Odukwe lost their 100% record with a 4-2 home loss to Insulators,
who gained their first points in the process. Odukwe do though stay
on top of the table by goal difference with Simla having lost also.
Insulators went into this game with no points against unbeaten
and free-scoring Odukwe, perhaps thinking there could be easier
Sunday mornings. Those feelings were confirmed when the home side
took an early lead with an excellent goal by James Smith.
Insulators came back into the game but it was Odukwe that added a
second, through Fin Wells, for a 2-0 half time lead.
Insulators then lost a player through injury and another due to
illness, so the second half looked to be an uphill struggle.
However, James Dunn tapped in from close range to give Insulators
hope and Martin Page-Mitchell equalised with a fine volley. The
game continued with chances at both ends until James Philpott was
fouled in the area and Cole Walsh calmly slotted in the penalty.
Both teams continued to play well and create chances, but it was
Tom Bridger who settled the match scoring from the half way line
to make it 4-2. A good game, but a great comeback to record.
The official referee was unable to officiate so an Odukwe player
covered the game and was both fair and honest. Both teams deserve
credit for a competitive, entertaining game.
There were three games played on adjacent pitches at Tonbridge and
plenty of goals.
Big result of the day was no doubt the four-nil beating of Simla by
Artois United. Two early goals set the pace. Although Simla tried
hard to get back into the game, they were unable to penetrate
Artois' well organised midfield and defence. Shortly before
half time, the Simla goal made an ill advised attempt at a clearance
well outside his area, nera the touchline. Peter Shaw robbed him and
calmly slid the ball over the goal line from a distance and tight
angle.
The second half was fairly even except that only on the odd occasion
was Artois 'keeper Dave Holdstock troubled. On this occasion he
picked up a slight knock, bravely going into crowd to fist the ball
away. Simla are in red.
Simla's defence and goalkeeper were frequently under pressure.
Artois wrapped up the game and the points with a fourth goal towards
the end, breaking through Simla's stretched defence. The full tally
of goals was two each for Peter Shaw and Regan Corke.
On the next pitch, Green Lane had turned up for their game with
Charcott with only the bare eleven players. 'If only we had the
numbers every week, one said'. That didn't seem to matter as they
came off 3-2 winners with two goals from Bal Maher and one from
James Knight. Charcott's Jay Pring scored both their goals and there
were some near misses. The numbers were evened up when Charcott had
a player sent off for swearing at the referee.
The third game at the Farm saw AFC Tonbridge hosting AFC Valour. It
was close game, ending 2-0 to the visitors. It was goal-less at half
time. Aaron Baker put Valour ahead and the second was an unfortunate
own goal, a low cross clipping the heels of a defender at the near
post before he could get out of the way. There were some near misses
in this game too, Valour are in white. The header went just over the
bar,
Elsewhere, Paddock Wood were at home to a weakened AFC Borough team
and came off winners by 3-1. Simon Hammond scored twice and Lee
Chapman the other. Oscar Harrison replied for the Borough.

Division Three
Division Three is already shaping up to be an interesting contest.
Only three points separate the top seven teams, with some having a
game in hand.
Royal Oak are the only 100% team, three games and three wins the
latest being 4-3 win at Brenchley. A hat-trick from Ashley
Bell was added to by Max Ravenscroft. Paul Smith and two from
Mike Williams were Brenchley's reply.
Speldhurst Rangers moved up the table following a 5-3 win at TW
Ridgewaye Reserves. Speldhurst turned up to see the pitch wasn't
mowed which would affect their tiki taka football, so they set up to
play a Stoke style of football. [Editor - I take this to mean boot
it down the field and see what happens.] Speldhurst went one nil
down around the fifteen minute mark to a goal by Johnny Hughes.
Rangers' Andreas Theodorou robbed a centre back of possession and
with the 'keeper out of position, he had the simple task of
passing into an empty net for the equaliser.
Ridgewaye took the lead again with a lucky flick [harsh!] from Dom
Lambert which hit the post and went in. Speldhurst equalised through
a traditional Ollie Crees throw in, Dr Harry Hopwood scoring his
first goal for the club and celebrating by kissing the badge and
pointing to the sky. Speldhurst started the second half slowly and
conceded from a free kick converted by Gavin Hawes. Speldhurst
scored immediately after from aother Ollie Crees throw in,
which James Hughes collected and slotted the ball in the bottom
corner. Speldhurst scored a fourth after brilliant play down the
left by Liam O Connor, Dan 'Badger' Kelly and James Hughes which
left Ollie Crees a one on one with the keeper to make it 4-3.
Speldhurst scored their fifth with a classic James Hughes shank
[Harsher] he tried to pass it out to the right winger and ended up
spooning it in the top right hand corner. Speldhurst held out and
won the game comfortably in the end.
Westerham also moved up after a 4-1 home win over Tonbridge United.
The goals came from Nathan Martin, Harrison Brooker, Ross Clarke and
Franky Hamilton-Black . Warren Jarvis scored for United, who are
next to bottom with one point from three games played.
Insulators Reserves made it two wins from two. They were at home to
Artois United Reserves. Artois dominated possession for the first
quarter of this match, with Insulators taking time to get into the
game. When they did it was a fabulous 25 yard strike from Harry
Mascall as he turned and smashed the ball into the top corner giving
the 'keeper no chance. The game remained end to end for the
remainder of the first half with Artois edging possession.
The second half had the same pattern, with Artois creating chances
but the home defence playing well, marshalled by Martin Ives and
Tommy Sceal. in the 75th minute a counter-attack by Insulators saw
Jake Pingault play a great pass to Bailey Wright who ran forward and
calmly slotted the ball home from outside the box for another fine
goal. Artois continued to press, but were unable to find the goal
that their hard work deserved.
Dunton Green picked up their first points of the season with a 6-0
win at home against bottom side Riverside Colts. There was a
hat-trick in this game for Alex Gates, plus goals from Rory
Ward, James Vigis and Matt Johnson. Goalie Ben Clive kept the clean
sheet.
