West Kent Sunday League News Report –
Sunday 23rd January 2022
All games went ahead with some signifcant results in all areas.
Kent Sunday Premier Cup
Artois United bowed out
to the strong Market Hotel side from Ashford. It was a nine goal
game with Market Hotel winning by the odd goal, 5- 4.
Kent Sunday Junior Trophy
It was a good day for Royal Oak,
who reached the quarter finals of the Kent Sunday Junior trophy with
a 2 - 0 home win over Sandwich Town of the Thanet League. Jack
Williams and Matt Last scored the goals. Their next match will be on
13th February. The draw is awaited.
Division One / Two
It is tight at the top, with Simla only two points ahead of Pembury
Sunday and three ahead of Artois United but the latter have a game
in hand.
After last week's blitzkrieg, Division One/Two league
leaders Simla found
the going harder against Dormansland
Rockets. With no quarter being asked or given by
either side, half time was reached with the game scoreless.
Simla's player manager Joe Fuller was to break the deadlock after
about twenty minutes into the second half, this was followed by Luke
Leppard rounding the Rockets keeper to put Simla two up after a weak
defensive header failed to reach its intended target, the
aforementioned goalie.
Rich Wetton pulled one back for Rockets with a well struck free kick
from the edge of the box with about ten minutes to go.
This though proved to be too little too late for the home side, as
Simla took the 2- 1 win and the three points towards their continued
title challenge.
Pembury Sunday scraped a
narrow 1 - 0 win over Paddock Wood with Matt Rice-Tucker the scorer,
keeping them in second place. Toby Forward kept his sixth clean
sheet of the season. He leads the League in that department.
Green Lane have only a slim
mathematical chance of a top three spot at the split but did their
goal difference no harm with a 19 - 0 win over the valiant AFC Tonbridge side. Bal Maher
scored eleven and is now the Division's top scorer.
There was a hat-trick for Dom Welsh while Reece Anderson, Ollie
Hyland, Harry Hickmott, Jordon Austin and an own goal made up the
total.
Charcott condemned TW Ridgwaye to their fourth
heavy defeat in a row, winning 10-1 at Tonbridge Farm. Luke Ailles
and Jools Walker both scored hat-tricks. Also scoring were James
Coleman with two, Kane Walker and Ryan Silvester. Johnny Hughes
scored what can only be a consolation goal for Ridgewaye.
Down at the bottom Insulators,
six games without a win, drew at home with AFC Borough. The home side
are in modest form at present and needed a result. It didn't
start well as the visitors took the lead on nine minutes when a shot
from the left was parried by the home keeper which left a tap-in for
the lead. Fifteen minutes later a good shot from the edge of the box
made it 2-0 and things were looking bleak. A minute before the
break Kane Ramsell pulled one back to provide hope for the second
half.
When Martin Page-Mitchell's half volley flew into the Borough net
soon after half time it looked like Slators could go on to win.
However, within minutes a shot from an acute angle sneaked into the
home net as Borough took the lead again. Almost immediately James
Dunn equalised from close range and a very good spell followed for
the home side but several chances were missed. The big chance came
when Ramsell was fouled in the box, but the penalty was comfortably
saved by Borough's keeper.
In a great last few minutes Borough re-took the lead with an
unchallenged header from a corner before Kane Ramsell scored his
second to secure a draw. An entertaining game played between two
well matched sides on the day. Borough's scorers were Alex Gunn, Ben
Simmonds, Jake Lorimer and Ed Handford. Gunn is on record as a
goalkeeper with two clean sheets to his name this season. A new rôle
up front?
The top four as it stands will be in the top tier in the second
phase. At the bottom, AFC Tonbridge have been repositioned into
Division Three. Insulators and TW Ridgewaye will go into
Division Two as will possibly Goudhurst and Dormansland Rockets. The
five in the middle have everything to play for.
As the first phase draws to a close, there are some interesting
games to be played over the next two or three Sundays. AFC Borough
have finished their programme and must now wait for the results of
the remaining games.
Remaining fixtures for the middle
of the table teams
Paddock Wood V Goudhurst United and TW Ridgewaye
AFC Valour v Pembury Sunday and TW Ridgewaye
Charcott v Odukwe and Dormansland Rockets
Odukwe v Charcott and Green Lane

Division Three
After seven successive wins, Brenchley's
progress towards the Division Three title was brutally arrested by AFC Borough Reserves, who
triumphed 4-0 at Goldsmith's. The Division's leading goalscorer
Oscar Harrison was on the mark again, his colleagues Jack Gordon,
Matt Pickett and Sean Monro added one each.
Insulators Reserves kept up
the pressure with a 2-1 win at Westerham.
It had been a while since Insulators had been on the end of a
defeat, so it was always going to be interesting to see if they
could perform against a very useful Westerham side
There seemed to be a bit of a hangover from last week as Westerham
dominated the opening exchanges and their persistence was rewarded
on twelve minutes with the opening goal of the game scored by Ollie
Goodchild. This seemed to wake up Insulators who grew into the game
and started creating some good chances, but some wasteful finishing
saw the score remain 1 - 0 until 35 minutes. A delightful ball
from Nik Weedon to Harry Mascall was brilliantly finished from the
edge of the box to make the game level.
Insulators would rue more slack finishing as the game headed into
half time at 1 goal a piece
The second half was largely a scrappy affair and tensions were
certainly building on the pitch. Both teams created chances
and will feel like they deserved to win, but it was Insulators who
went home the happier of the two sides as in the 93rd minute, man of
the match Dan Green played Jacob Pingault through and he rounded the
goalkeeper before finally getting a goal after several spurned
chances.
It was a close game and hopefully Westerham can take some points off
the teams at the top end of the league over the remainder of the
season as we push for a promotion place.
Sedlescombe Rangers, in
third place, have now won four in a row and have games in
hand. They overcame in-form Artois
United Reserves 4- 3 with two goals from Harry Lovick, one
each from Harry Loates and Charlie Webbe. Ollie Sugden scored twice
for Artois United, Dave Cherry the other.
Dunton Green did the double
over Tonbridge United, this
time with a 4-1 home win. There were two goals each from Frankie
Ingram and Alec Gates. Josh Salvidge replied for United.
Ticehurst Village may have
turned a corner. They continued winning ways in 2022 with a
comprehensive 8-1 defeat of Riverside Colts at Ticehurst Rec.
Riverside started well though and went 1-0 up in the early minutes
of the game. The home team however were then spurred on and
equalised through Leon Fisher, who rifled a left foot shot into the
top corner. Fisher would go onto score three more goals
including another 25 yard top corner effort in the second half.
Ticehurst's Adam Brotherwood scored his first of the season as Shane
Bumstead, Oli Marsh and Jason Marsh also tucked away goals.
