West Kent Sunday League News Report –
Sunday 22nd May 2022
Issues are now settled at the top of Divisions Two and Three, but
sad to say clubs were struggling to get teams out even though medals
are at stake. The final Sunday of the season is to come.
Membership of the League is still open for next season. The
formation of an Under 21 Division is also under consideration. Any
club interested in either or both should make contact with League
Chairman Stuart Turner. Contact details are to be found at http://www.wksl.org.uk/handbook/Handbook_index.htm
WKSFL Intermediate Cup - played Wednesday 18th May at Rusthall
FC
Dormansland Rockets completed a unique double
of winning a Surrey County Cup and the West Kent Intermediate Cup
by beating Division Three champions Sedlescombe Rangers 3-2 at
Jockey Farm, Rusthall on Wednesday night. After a cagey opening
where both sides had half chances Dormansland took the lead when
Ed Sharman converted a pinpoint Rich Wetton cross. Sedlescombe
were close to equalising on the stroke of half time and would have
done so but for a superb save from Louis Stone in the Dormansland
net. 1-0 to the Rockets at half time.
After the break Dormansland soon found
themselves with a free kick in a dangerous area, top scorer Rich
Wetton struck the ball sweetly and a wicked deflection off the
wall left the Sedlescombe' keeper with absolutely no chance. Just
as Dormansland were beginning to look comfortable Sedlescombe
pulled a goal back, a long ball was flicked on and Bradley
Pritchard made no mistake with the finish. The goal
galvanised Sedlescombe and they had a couple of good chances to
draw level but failed to hit the target. As they pushed for an
equaliser, Dormansland found more and more opportunities on the
counter attack and eventually made one of these pay. Ben Terry
played a superb ball down the right hand channel and Ashley
Hollom's low cross was coolly converted by Wetton, 3-1.
Just as Dormansland looked home and hosed a freak error offered
Sedlescombe a way back into the game. Louis Stone in the Rockets net
doing his best audition for a Nick Hancock bloopers DVD, he let the
ball bounce in front of him in the six yard box, it took an awkward
spin and flew into the net. No doubt he would claim the laws of
physics momentarily shifted! Rangers credited the goal
to Jake Thomas, perhaps sparing Stone some embarrassment.
Sedlescombe had ten minutes to find an equaliser, they created
the chances but again found themselves ruing some wasteful
finishing. Dormansland just about held on to complete the double.

Division Three
Sedlescombe Rangers were almost certain of the winner's trophy
before Sunday's game against Royal Oak. Royal Oak pulled out of the
game, citing player unavailability, thus confirming it.
The important game for second place between Brenchley and Insulators
Reserves did take place and it was Brenchley who came out on top 3-2
after a very good game.
One would think a game with the winner possibly gaining second place
was going to be a cagey affair, but this was anything but as both
teams started on the front foot. Insulators broke the deadlock
after just five minutes as Harry Mascall scored, ably assisted by
Bailey Wright. After eleven minutes it was all level after a long
ball was controlled excellently by Mike Williams who ran through and
slotted home. The game continued at a good pace and it was Wrights'
turn to score on 27 minutes following a great run and cross by
David Brooks. Ten minutes from half time saw Brenchley make the most
of their height advantage for Aidan Gayler to score with a header
from a corner, although it should have been defended better by
'Slators. The game remained level until half time.
The second half continued in much the same vein and after an hour a
defensive error led to the Brenchley's Mike Williams finding himself
with just the 'keeper to beat and it was 3 – 2 to the home
side. There was time for Jacob Pingault to hit the crossbar
and several other chances but the score remained 3 – 2 and Brenchley
earned the bragging rights
Overall a positive season for Insulators Reserves and hopefully they
can push on next season.
Tunbridge Wells Ridgewaye's season of two halves continued in upbeat
mode with a 9-1 win over AFC Tonbridge. Over the last ten league
games they are the form team.
Sunday's haul featured a hat-trick by Callum Seal and goals from
Carl Emberson, Harry Demmon, Billy Mcleod, there were two from
Josh Higgins and one from Sam Hayward and Eden Northcote.
Speldhurst Rangers rounded off their season with a 4-2 win against
AFC Borough Reserves at Goldsmith's. Joe Howse got the first after a
fine passing move. Andy Watts slipped in Howse who beat the 'keeper
at the near post. An underhit backpass allowed Dan 'The badger'
Kelly in one on one with the 'keeper. His shot cannoned off the
inside of the post for 2-0 at half time. Speldhurst started the
second half well. Joe Pursell hit a venomous strike which dipped and
swerved on the floor and spun in both directions which was somehow
stopped by the keeper. However as he tried to pick the ball up he
punched the ball into the back of his own net. [Should that have
been an own goal?]
AFC Borough scored a couple of goals through Benj Simmonds and
George Blunden when Speldhurst were down to ten men due to an
injury. Joe Howse finished off the game with his second strike,
another converted whilst one on one against the keeper .
Artois United Reserves have fallen away over the past month and this
continued when they lost 7-4 at Ticehurst Village Cub. Matt
Sanders led the way with a hat.trick, the other goals were scored by
Jason Marsh, Leon Fisher, Dave Harvey and Ben Evans.
