West Kent Sunday League News Report – Sunday 15th May 2022

The season is coming to a close with some issues still undecided. The Intermediate Cup Final between Dormansland Rockets dan Sedlescombe Rangers will be played at Rusthall FC on Wednesday evening. There are still two more Sundays of league matches remaining.

Division One

The final game of the Division One season was a 2-2 draw between AFC Valour and Charcott.  Ash Wells and Shane Hadaway scored for Valour, Charcott will finish above them.

Division Two

Dormansland hosted Insulators on Sunday and ran out comfortable 5-1 winners to remain in contention for the runners up spot in Division 2. Jamie McCoy scored the only goal of the first half shortly before the break, with a superb lobbed finish from a tight angle. There were claims for offside but over-ruled. It was just reward for near constant Dormansland pressure, with Ashley Hollom and Miguel Figuerra-Dunne both guilty of missing straightforward chances prior to the deadlock being broken.

Rockets enjoyed a fast start to the second half, putting together a slick move from the  kick off that culminated in captain Ollie Whitefoot steering home Rich Bishop’s pinpoint delivery. Ashley Hollom would make amends for his first half wastefulness with a well taken brace and substitute Ross Waghorn, playing in an unfamiliar striker role, converted a penalty. Insulators had pulled back a goal to make it 3-1 earlier in the half, Max Bridges finding the top corner following a great delivery into the box.

For Insulators it was a disappointing end to a disappointing season. They had a positive start to the match and felt unlucky to be behind at half time, but Dormansland's half time team talk obviously had the desired effect.

Rockets host Odukwe next week in the final game, needing a win to secure second place.

Division Three

Sedlescombe Rangers are almost certain of claiming the title, but sad to report that for the fifth time this season their opposition were unable to raise a team. Royal Oak do have a mathematical chance of catching them, but their next game is at Sedlescombe on Sunday, where a draw or win will confirm the honours to Rangers.

Insulators Reserves moved into second place over Brenchley with a 2-1 win against AFC Tonbridge. Brenchley meanwhile were being held to a 2-2 draw by Dunton Green.

After defeat in last weeks cup final Insulators had to get themselves back on track in the battle for the top two. A much changed Insulators were enjoying the better of the opening ten minutes when AFC Tonbridge hit on the counter with a low cross into the box being smartly finished by Oren Morris to put them one up. Mid way through the half Josh Heinricci played a delightful ball through to Bailey Wright who finished calmly and evened things up. The rest of the first half saw both teams create few chances, but good goalkeeping and good defensive lines were proving too much and the game headed into half time at one-all.

A change of personnel and formation at half time certainly saw Insulators dominate the opening exchanges of the second half, with Jacob Pingault being denied by the post, crossbar and' keeper in the pursuit of the next goal. As the game headed into injury time it felt like it was going to be one of those days and Insulators would have to settle for a draw before Cole Walsh and Steve Stopps combined and Stopps found himself on the edge of the box where he curled the ball into the far corner for the winning goal and his first goal for Insulators after many years of service (cue the pitch invasion). AFC Tonbridge certainly played their part in a competitive game and Insulators were a very relieved side as the three points keeps them in the hunt ahead of a crucial game against Brenchley next week.

Dunton Green had played four of the top five teams in recent weeks, losing them all, but showed spirit to hold Brenchley to a 2 -2 draw. Brenchley's own form has stuttered in recent weeks and they must win their final game against Insulators Reserves next week to have a chance of the runners up spot. Dunton Green's scorers were Ben Clive and Sam Evenden.

AFC Borough Reserves took their Junior Cup winning form back into the League with a 4-3 win at Royal Oak on Thursday evening, followed by a 3-2 win over Riverside Colts on Sunday. Oscar Harrison added one to his tally. He now has 36 for the season, but is three behind Ollie Sugden of Artois United Reserves. Ed Handford scored twice in that win, George Holman hit one.

Colts have recovered a little after a run of very heavy defeats in March. Matt Pickett, Benji Simmonds and Todd Pannell were Borough's scorers on Sunday.
