West Kent Sunday League News Report –
Sunday 13th February 2022
Congratulations to Royal Oak FC, who have reached the
semi-finals of the Kent Sunday Junior Trophy after a really
good win at Medway League side New Inn Reds.
Kent Sunday Junior Trophy
Royal Oak made the long trip to Teynham to meet New Inn
Reds and must have enjoyed the trip home. A 3-2 win with two goals
from Sam Grit and a third from Joe Rutland saw them past
potentially difficult opponents. They will wish for a home draw,
with two of the other three semi final sides hailing from south
London and the third being Chatham based Darland Spartans FC.
WKSFL Senior Cup
The WKSFL Senior Cup will be contested initially in three groups
of four, with each team playing the others once. The top two in
each group plus the two best third based teams will go through to
the quarter-finals.
In Group Two, Simla got off to a good start, beating Insulators
5-0. Luke Leppard hit a hat-trick, his sixth of the season. The
other goals were scored Ian Parsons and Luke Stratford, while in
goal Joe Cullipp kept his sixth clean sheet of the season. In
Group Three, Pembury Sunday were grateful in victory to
Charlie Johns, who scored the only goal of the game against Charcott.
In goal, Toby Forward kept the clean sheet, his seventh of the
season. he is the League leader in that department.
Regrettably two of the scheduled games did not take place with
teams citing lack of available players. The Management Committee
will deal with those in due course.
Division One / Two
Although the second phase split is confirmed, there are still a few
phase 1 games to be played. Teams will take their points and goals
forward, so it is important that these 'missing' games are played. Dormansland
Rockets entertained Green Lane and it was the Paddock
Wood based side that took the spoils with a 4-2 win. Green Lane were
three nil ahead on the hour. Rockets' come back started when the
prolific scorer Rich Wetton was relieved of his goalkeeping duties.
He first e dispatched a penalty and got his second via a header at
the far post following a delicate chip from Ben Perry. Just when
Rockets thought they might get something from the game, Green Lane
scored their fourth to make it safe. The league's leading scorer Bal
Maher scored twice for the Green, also scoring two was Johnny
Phillips.
Division Three
Defeat for Sedlescombe Rangers and a goal-less draw for Brenchley
has opened up the Division Three title race.
Sedlescombe Rangers have been in good form, with six straight
wins before Sunday's clash with TW Ridgewaye Reserves. But
with their opponents having had a run of seven games without defeat,
a minor upset was on the cards and so it proved to be. The game at
Sedlescombe Rec ended in a two-nil win for Ridgewaye, Callum Seal
and Dom Lambert scoring the goals.
Meanwhile, Brenchley and Artois United Reserves
scrapped out that rarest of Sunday League results, a goal-less draw.
Artois' keeper Jamie Holder kept his sixth clean sheet of the
season.
Those results allowed Insulators Reserves to leap-frog over
both of them into top spot. The cold winds meant that there was no
shortage in volunteers to run the line to keep warm for the game at
Speldhurst Rangers.
The encounter started at a fast pace and chances were created at
both ends before a big kick up field from Insulators goalkeeper
Craig Smith found Harry Mascall who beat two men and the goalkeeper
to put Insulators 1-0 up on 16 minutes.
Speldhurst hit back immediately after eighteen minutes as they
capitalised on a misplaced pass and a smart finish from Joe Howse
made it one a-piece. The frantic nature of the game saw another
assist for Insulators 'keeper Smith as the clearance this time fell
to Jacob Pingault who continued his recent run of form. That
made it 2 – 1 after twenty-one minutes. Two minutes later and it was
3 -1 after as Jake Freeman made the most of a strong run to set up
Jacob Pingault for his second of the game and Insulators third. The
game settled down with Insulators taking control, but a lapse of
concentration from a throw in saw Speldhurst reduce the arrears to 3
-2 just before half time through their leading scorer James
Hughes.
Insulators prepared for the initial onslaught from Speldhurst at the
start of the second half, but Jake Freeman again provided an assist
as Cole Walsh scored after just 52 seconds to settle Insulators
nerves. Insulators were looking a lot more organised in the second
half and were awarded a penalty on 53 minutes which Harry Mascall
coolly slotted home to make it 5-2. The dominance was again rewarded
on seventy minutes as Jacob Pingault completed his hat trick with a
free kick that left the 'keeper well beaten and the final score 6-2
to Insulators Reserves.
Royal Oak are still in the reckoning for honours. Their excellent
cup run has put them well behind with their League fixtures. They
are four or five games behind the leaders, three wins would put the
pressure on. Next Sunday they will face Brenchley, a key game for
both.
Down at the bottom, Tonbridge United won for the first time
this season, 5-1 at home to Ticehurst Village. Main
ingredient was a hat-trick for Hayden Jarvis. Harry Bamblett scored
twice. Ticehurst's up and down form continues.
There were eleven goals in the game between AFC Tonbridge
and Riverside Colts. It was the Colts who edged the game
6-5. They do not send their scorers. I can tell you that Sam Coster
scored a hat-trick for AFC Tonbridge, with Bradley Needham and an
own goal making up the total.
Oscar Harrison of AFC Borough Reserves went to the top of
the Division Three goalscorers list with all three goals in their
3-1 win at home to Westerham. Harrison now has 26 for
the season so far.
