West Kent Sunday League News Report – Sunday 10th April 2022

Cup ties took centre stage on Sunday, with several ties being played in the second round of the Intermediate Cup plus an important match in the Senior Cup.

WKSFL Senior Cup

Artois United had already beaten Simla twice in the League and made it three out of three with a 5-2 win in the Senior cup Second Round on Sunday. Top scorer Lucas Murrain hit his second hat-trick of the season, Peter Shaw and Taylor Galvin made it five. Simla's Stewart Gostlow and Bal Maher's efforts were in vain. Maher still tops the Division one goalscoring chart.

WKSFL Intermediate Cup

Seven ties took place and there were a couple of surprises.

AFC Borough of Division Two hosted Sedlescombe Rangers, currently  top of Division Three and it was Rangers who came out on top, winning 5-3 at Goldsmith's. Harry Loates with two, Rhys Daniels, Charlie Webbe and Alfie Shand were Rangers scorers. Brough's top two markesmen George Holman and Jacob Feasey (2) both scored but it was not enough.

AFC Tonbridge, recovering after an horrendous first few months, went to Speldhurst Rangers and came home with a 5-3 win under their belts. Speldhurst found themselves two goals down early on. They fought back well and scored through Joe Pursell who smashed a 25 yard screamer into the top corner. Speldhurst won a penalty, Justin Guthridge stepped up and missed, but Andreas Theodorou was on hand to dispatch the rebound. With Speldhurst in the ascendancy, they scored another with a through ball from Ali Stoner to Andreas Theodorou who slotted the ball through the keepers leg´s. Speldhurst then decided to give up the fight and AFC Tonbridge took advantage of it.  High note for them was a hat-trick by Reece Porter. The other goals were scored by Lee Elliot and Alex Wooster.

Tonbridge United belied their lowly League position by beating Ticehurst Village on penalties after the game had finished two apiece. United had drawn and won against Ticehurst in their two League matches so maybe not too much of shock. United won 4-2 on penalties after Harry Bamblett and Matt Anderson's goals has levelled the scores by Shane Bumstead and Jason Marsh.

Ollie Sugden's 35th goal of the season was the difference between Artois United Reserves and Royal Oak in a narrow 1-0 win.

Insulators won for the first time in League and Cup since 17th October by beating Goudhurst United 5-2. United's last win was against Insulators in the Senior Cup back in February.

Insulators found themselves 1-0 up after ten minutes when a fine free kick from Ethan Bailey fell to Kane Ramsell who finished from 20 yards. The game was end-to-end with the home side having just the better of things. It took a good save by Insulators keeper Dan Marks to maintain the lead and that paid off as Ryan Shepherd made it 2-0 with the best goal of the game. A fantastic strike from 30 yards left the Goudhurt 'keeper with no chance. Just as Insulators were hoping to have a comfortable half time lead, Goudhurst pulled one back, a fairly soft goal from five yards out by Jamie Crouch in the 38th minute. Immediately from the kick-off, Ben Boodle raced away to the other end to finish with a well taken goal to restore the two goal advantage. Insulators then scored a third goal in six minutes with James Philpott breaking through before rounding the keeper to slot in.

With a 4-1 scoreline at half time, Insulators were able to see out the match with both sides adding a second half goal - Martin Page-Mitchell for 'Slators and John Bartram for Goudhurst.

A rare win this season but all the more enjoyable for that, said our man on the touchline.

Rich Wetton hit all three for Dormansland Rockets in their three - one win at Brenchley, for whom Rich Bridger was the scorer.

Westerham advanced to the quarter-finals with the same score at Riverside Colts. The scorers for Westerham were Olly Goodchild, Lewis Arnold and Charlie Brogan.

With the demise to TW Ridgewaye's first team, Dunton  Green were awarded a bye.
The draw for the second round (the quarter-finals) is

Artois United Reserves        v       AFC Tonbridge
Dormansland Rockets         v       Westerham
Dunton Green      v      Insulators
Tonbridge United      v      Sedlescombe Rangers

All games are scheduled for next Sunday, 17th April

Division Two

The scheduled game between Paddock Wood and AFC Valour had to be called off following an illegal occupation of the Elm Tree ground by 'travellers'.

Division Three

There was only one game in which TW Ridgewaye Reserves made up for last week's loss at Brenchley with a 3-1 win over AFC Borough Reserves.  The result puts them in fourth place but with three games to play they have only a mathematical chance of medals. Dan Thomas, Eden Northcote and
Dom Lambert scored the goals. Oscar Harrison replied for Borough's Reserves. He is second behind Ollie Sugden of Artois United Reserves in the Division's scoring table.
