West Kent Sunday League News Report –
Sunday 8th May 2022
First the news that next Sunday's WKSFL Senior Cup Final is
postponed while the Management Committee investigates a serious
matter concerning one of the teams involved. No new date is yet
arranged.
WKSFL Intermediate Cup
Dormansland Rockets are on course for a second Cup honour after
beating Artois United Reserves in the semi-final on Sunday. In that
final they will meet Division Three leaders Sedlescombe Rangers, at
Rusthall FC on Wednesday 18th May, ko 7.45pm.
Rockets are indebted no doubt to leading scorer Rich Wetton, who hit
a hat-trick. He has scored 22 goals in WKSFL matches this season,
split exactly 50/ 50 between league and cup games. Artois United
Reserves have now gone out in the semi-final of the two WKSFL Cups
they competed for.
Dormansland Rockets bounced back from their Senior Cup Semi Final
humbling at the hands of Artois by beating their reserves 5-2 in the
Intermediate Cup Semi Final. The Rockets welcomed back several of
last week’s absentees including top scorer Rich Wetton. They took
the lead within the first ten minutes. Wetton crossed to Tom Poulter
from the left who finished with a smart flicked volley from close
range. Dormansland continued to dominate the ball and doubled their
lead through Ed Sharman who finished from a tight angle with a
superb lob. To their credit Artois Reserves continued to battle and
were rewarded for their perseverance when Adam Hardy fired in a
superb strike from range shortly before half time.
The second half saw Dormansland come quickly out of the blocks, Rich
Wetton extending the lead twice, first with a great finish from the
edge of the box that went in off the post and second converting a
cut back with his left foot after good work from Miguel
Figuerra-Dunne down the left. Again Artois refused to lie down and
quickly pulled a goal back through a first time finish from Division
3 top scorer Ollie Sugden, who was a lively presence throughout.
With five minutes remaining and Artois pressing hard for another
goal, Rich Wetton completed his hat-trick, racing through on the
counter attack from the halfway line and slotting calmly past the
keeper one on one.
WKSFL Junior Cup
AFC Borough Reserves and Insulators Reserves fought out a one-one
draw in front of a big crowd at Rusthall. AFC Borough eventually
came through on penalties.
This was always likely to be a tight match and so it proved.
Insulators had the dream start when a mix-up between a Borough
defender and keeper allowed Jake Pingault to find the net after just
47 seconds. Rather than provide impetus to take control, it was
Borough that came back stronger, keeping the 'Slators defence at
full stretch. Chances were few and far between with the 'keepers
having fairly routine matters to deal with. Borough were probably
shading the first half on points, but it looked like Insulators
might go into the break with a lead. However, in the 41st minute a
deep corner beyond the far post was met by an unmarked Connor
Edmunds, who shot firmly in from about ten yards. Half time 1-1.
The second half continued in an all-action but few chances style. In
the 58th minute Insulators 'keeper Craig Smith pulled off a fine
save to keep Borough at bay. Eighteen 8 minutes from time a a
lunging tackle by a Borough player saw them reduced to 10 men after
his dismissal. Insulators best chance came soon after, when Cole
Walsh out-jumped the Borough defender. As the ball was about to
cross the line a defender just got the ball away. Goal line
technology confirmed it hadn't quite crossed the line. Fine
defending.
Despite the man advantage, Insulators were unable to maintain their
usual pass and move style. Borough worked hard to remain reasonably
comfortable. 1-1 at 90 minutes. Into added time and it was Jake
Pingault who nearly won it as he broke through and lobbed the
Borough 'keeper, only to see the ball land on the roof of the net.
Both teams huffed and puffed but the game ended level.
Penalties
Insulators missed their first penalty and Borough scored - 0-1.
Insulators then scored their next two as Borough missed two: 2-1 to
Insulators. Insulators then missed and scored as Borough scored 2.
After 5 penalties each the score was 3-3. Insulators then missed and
Borough scored to win the final 4-3 on penalties.
Congratulations to AFC Borough and commiserations to the young
Insulators team who put up a fine performance and should be proud of
themselves.
Maybe not a classic, but the large crowd enjoyed an end-to-end game
played on a fine, sunny day. Click a picture to see it full size.
Division One
The season is winding up now. AFC Valour met Paddock Wood, who came
away with a 3-1 win, thanks to two goals from their top scorer Simon
Hammond and one from Alex Emery. AFC Valour's own top marksman, Matt
Jagelman, scored for them.
Phase Two - each team plays the others once
points and goals carried forward from phase 1

Division Two
No games were scheduled.
Division Three
Sedlescombe Rangers are clear favourites to claim the Division Three
title with them winning against Dunton Green while Royal Oak being
held to a draw.at Westerham. Westerham may though have a say in the
final outcome as Sedlescombe's last outing this season is a double
header against them.
Rangers win was emphatic, 9-2, with three players each scoring twice
- Charlie Webbe, Bradley Pritchard and Harry Loates. Also scoring
were Luke Brundle, Archie Irving and Alfie Shand. Ben Clive
and Joe Regan replied for the Green, who will be playing as
Edenbridge FC next season following their move to play in that town.
Westerham have found scoring difficult all season and had suffered
ten successive league defeats before yesterday. James Beeny
and Jamie Ward scored the important goals, Jack Williams scored both
for the Oak. Mathematically it's not all over, but Sedlescombe would
have to really collapse to let the other two challengers in with
even a faint hope.
AFC Tonbridge and Speldhurst Rangers played out a 1-1 draw in which
both side's top scorers were on target - Alex Wooster for AFC
Tonbridge and James Hughes for Speldhurst Rangers.
