West Kent Sunday League News Report – 3rd October 2021

Despite Saturday's torrential rain, most games went ahead as scheduled. There were plenty of goals.

Division One / Two

With Odukwe idle, Simla were able to take over as leaders with a comprehensive 5-0 win at home against Goudhurst United. That more than made up for their poor performance the previous Sunday. Scorers were Ian Parsons with a hat-trick,  Matt Coleman and Brett Milham. In goal, Joe Cullip in goal kept his sheet clean.

Artois United followed up last week's win over Simla with an 8-0 thrashing of AFC Valour at East Peckham. The excellent drainage at East Peckham made way for a smooth and slick playing surface. Unfortunately for the hosts, Artois' football was just  as smooth and slick as the pitch. Valour trailed 3-0 at half-time, despite countless heroic saves from Paul Redfern in goal, rolling back the years to keep the score down.

In the second half Artois squandered a few chances and Valour actually nearly nicked a goal to make it 3-1 but a solid defensive block meant it wasn’t to be. Artois, who had been superb throughout, made Valour pay with two more quick fire well worked goals. ‘How long left ref’? Was the shout at six minutes to go. Valour, showing some naivety, kept pushing for a goal and were caught on the break, shape went out of the window and Artois notched up another three goals in such a short space of time.

A bad day at the office, but hats off to Artois, since Valour were formed 17 years ago, we’ve never faced such strong opposition. We’ll learn from it and full credit to Tim (Thirlaway) and his lads.   The full goal tally for Artois was a hat-trick for Regan Corke, also there were two each for Peter Shaw and Lewis Murrain plus a single strike from max Carbune. Dave Holdstock kept the clean sheet in goal

AFC Borough were also among the goals, doing the damage with seven different scorers in their seven nil win over AFC Tonbridge. James Heir, Jacob Feasey, Ed Handford, Jack Holmes, Ben Simmonds, Sam Edmunds and Matt Taylor were the names on the scoresheet.

Dormansland Rockets hit St John's Yard for six at Colin Anderson Field. After two successive defeats at the start of the season, Dormansland Rockets now have two successive victories, this time with a win over St John's Yard. Though the final score was emphatic, the result was always in doubt until Rockets' scored their second midway through the second half against a team that never stopped working and battling to the end. Indeed, if they had bought their shooting boots when they had their opportunities the scoreline could have been different.

Rockets' scorers were Rich Wetton (3), Ali Jones, Tom  Poulter and Ashley Hollom. Nick Elwood kept the clean sheet, confirming Rockets second successive win after starting the season with two defeats..

In complete contrast to the other games, the Paddock Wood local derby between Insulators and Paddock Wood was a low scoring affair. Paddock Wood were on the front foot from the beginning and it was perhaps no surprise when Simon Hammond scored from a tight angle at the near post on 12 minutes. The away side continued to have the better possession, but it was Insulators that scored next with Cole Walsh calmly slotting home from the penalty spot in the 35th minute. In the second half Paddock Wood continued to have more of the ball and created the better chances. Despite that, Insulators will be disappointed that the winner was a tap in by Hammond following indecision in the home defence.

A few half chances came the home side's way but overall the visitors had the better of the game. Final score Insulators 1 - 2 Paddock Wood.

Division Three

Royal Oak made it four wins from four games with a good 5-2 home win over Insulators Reserves, who had problems with players not getting out of bed! Despite that, Insulators started strongly against top of the table Royal Oak but couldn’t make their early dominance count. Royal Oak started to get into the game and create chances of their own

Mid way through the first half the deadlock was broken with a long cross field ball and smart low finish beating Craig Smith for his first goal conceded in over 200 minutes of football, 1 – 0 to the Oak. The game continued to one of few clear cut chances and remained at 1 -0 till half time

Insulators again started strongly in the second half and some good interplay between Lewis Disbury and Harry Mascall resulted in Disbury lobbing the keeper from outside the box to bring the game back to all square. This seemed to kick Royal Oak into life and they were back in front on 60 minutes. With Insulators pushing for an equaliser, they exposed the gaps in the defence to go 3 – 1 up on 77 minutes. Bailey Wright was then fouled in the box to win a penalty for Insulators which Harry Mascall coolly slotted home to set up a frantic finale

Royal Oak won a penalty from a corner which was adjudged to have been cleared off the line by a hand and it was finished confidently on 89 minutes. There was still time to make it 5 -2 deep into injury time as Insulators 1 – 0 – 9 formation certainly left space for a long ball which was snapped up and calmly finished.
Final score 5-2 to Royal Oak which included a hat.-trick by Ashley Bell and a goal each from Dan Lazell and Joe Rutland.

Brenchley kept up the pressure, winning 3-1 at Westerham with all three coming from Conor Williams. Taylor Strange marked Westerham's only reply.

Sedlescombe Rangers had an almost local derby against Ticehurst Village. in which eleven goals were scored. Rangers scored seven of them, keeping their unbeaten record. There was a hat-trick from Alvin Scott and goals from Harry Loates, Ben Steadman, Charlie Webbe and Tom Swatton. Ticehurst won't have scored four very often and been beaten, certainly not in the last two truncated seasons. Jason Marsh 2, Oli Marsh and Leon Fisher scored but they are still winless.

Speldhurst Rangers stay fourth after a 3-3 draw away at Artois United Reserves. Definitely a game of two halves. Speldhurst went behind to an early goal by Alfie Owen then soon hit back with three quick-fire goals through an Ollie Crees header and a James Hughes double. Artois fought back in the second half to level the scores through Dan Edmonton and Rhys Newton. Artois then squandered several chances to take the points said our man on the spot.

On the next pitch at Tonbridge Farm, AFC Borough Reserves put five unanswered goals past Tonbridge United. Scorers were Oscar Harrison with 2, Marcus Alexander, Max Scott and Ryan Hackworth
