West Kent Sunday League News Report –
Sunday 1st May 2022
Dormansland Rockets gained important honours for the League by
winning the Surrey Sunday Lower Junior Cup.
The finalists in the Senior Cup will be Artois United and Paddock
Wood. The First and Second Divisions winners are already known, the
Third Division still go one of three ways, mathematically at least.
Useles fact for the week - sixty different players have scored
hat-tricks in WKSFL League and Cup matches this season.
Surrey Sunday Lower Junior Cup
Dormansland Rockets were held by Overtonians FC of the
Leatherhead and District Sunday League 3-3, but eventually
prevailed 4-3 on penalties. The game was played at Dorking
Wanderers FC on Wednesday night, 27th April.
Dormansland travelled to Dorking on Wednesday evening where they
faced Overtonians in the Surrey Cup final, looking to retain the
trophy they won in 2019 and due to Covid were still the holders.
The game started well for Dormansland after a horrendous error by
the Overtonians goalkeeper left Ashley Hollum free to roll the
ball into an empty net. Credit to Overtonians who reacted well to
going behind and after missing a couple of chances soon levelled
after a smart turn and finish by their striker. Overtonians took
the lead a few minutes later when Ben Terry conceded a penalty
that was calmly converted. Dormansland were relieved when the half
time whistle came with Overtonians in the ascendancy.
Whatever was said at half term clearly worked as Dormansland
quickly equalised, Ed Sharman scoring the goal of the game with a
cracking strike from 25 yards out. Minutes later Rich Wetton would
give Dormansland the lead for the second time in the game with a
well placed header. Once again Overtonians rallied having gone
behind and managed to equalise with 15 minutes of the game to go.
In truth it was a poor goal to concede, a long kick from the
goalkeeper splitting the defence and the Overtonian's forward made
no mistake one v one. The game finished 3-3 and as per Surrey Cup
rules went straight to penalties.
Despite Miguel Figuerra-Dunne blazing Dormansland's first spot
kick well over the bar, thanks to some heroics from Louis Stone in
goal Dormansland won the shoot-out 4-3 with Ross Waghorn
converting the crucial spot kick.

WKSFL Senior Cup Semi Finals
No such joy for Rockets in the WKSFL Senior Cup on Sunday. They were
soundly beaten 7-0 by Artois United. Missing over half the team that
had started the Surrey Cup final a few days earlier Dormansland were
always likely to struggle against the Division 1 champions Artois
and so it proved. Artois dominated the game throughout, leading 3-0
at the break, in part thanks to a superb volley from Regan Corke.
They would go on to add four further goals in the second half and
deservedly progress to the Senior Cup final. There were six names on
the scoresheet for Artois, Peter Shaw with two, Regan Corke, Kane
Joseph, Nathan Moseley, Harry Cohen and Taylor Galvin. In goal for
Artois United was Dave Holdstock, who kept his third clean sheet in
successive matches, making it nine for the season.
Artois will be joined in the Senior Cup Final by Paddock Wood, who
beat Charcott 4-0. Their scorers were Ollie Hyland, Reece Anderson,
Jordan Austin and Simon Hammond. Franklyn Taylor kept the
goalkeeper's clean sheet.
Artois United are the holders of the Senior Cup from season 2019 -
2020, last season's Cup not being contested. Paddock Wood have never
been in a Senior Cup Final. They are current holders of the Junior
Cup from that same season. The Senior Cup Final will be played at
Tunbridge Wells FC on Sunday May 15th, ko 2pm
Division One
The top of the table was decided last week, but the bottom three
places are not. AFC Valour came into the end of the season with one
game to play against each of the three teams above them and with a
chance of finishing off the bottom. They are off on the right track
with a 2-0 win over Pembury Sunday, thanks to goals by Chris Gregory
and Connor Robbins.
Phase Two - each team plays the others once
points and goals carried forward from phase 1

Division Two
The only game saw the two of the bottom sides meet at Goudhurst. The
game was competitive and close. Insulators took the lead through
Martin Page-Mitchell but the home side equalised before the break,
through Dan Hopkin's goal. In the second half Max Bridges scored to
restore Insulators lead before Ethan Bailey added a third - his
first goal for the club. Despite an unfortunate broken wrist for an
Insulators player, the game was played in a great spirit by both
sides.

Division Three
Sadly, now that the season is coming to an end, some teams are
finding it impossible to raise teams. That was the case for AFC
Borough Reserves who were due to play Sedlescombe Rangers and
Tonbridge United, who should have faced Artois United Reserves. The
points awarded are shown in the table below, but subject to
ratification by Tuesday evening's Management Committee meeting.
Sedlescombe Rangers do have one hand about three fingers on the
trophy but still need one more win to be absolutely sure. Second
placed Brenchley will be ruing lost points in recent weeks but are
still just about in the race after beating AFC Tonbridge 5-2. AFC's
scorers were Alex Wooster and Callum Wadge.
Insulators Reserves are also still just about there, achieving a
hard fought home win over Ticehurst Village Club. The home side
needed a win to maintain the push for top four and to be in form for
next Sunday’s Junior Cup Final.
Ticehurst had different ideas. The first half was end to end with
both sides playing attacking football. It was a surprise that we got
to half time at 0-0. The wise heads on the touch line suggesting
that one goal might win it.
As you might expect, goals flowed after the break. After 55
minutes Cole Walsh played a good pass to Jake Pingault who scored
with a fine shot into the corner of the goal. Ten minutes later a
pass from Harry Mascall found Pingault in the area. His instant turn
and shot made it 2-0.
Ticehurst could reasonably have felt hard done by at this score line
and maybe 'Slators felt the game was won. Wrong! 5 minutes later the
Ticehurst centre half pulled one back from a corner. A few minutes
later a misplaced pass played in Ticehurst’s nippy striker who ran
through and calmly equalised. The last fifteen minutes and it was
anyone’s game. Credit to Insulators who held their nerve and
Pingault completed an excellent hat trick to claim the points. Both
sides deserve credit for an entertaining game as does referee Mark
Miller .
Royal Oak have a lot to do to even finish second, but it's still on
as they beat Riverside Colts 6-0, scorers being Jack Williams, Joe
Rutland with two,
Luke Graham, Ryan Moran and Josh Harris.
TW Ridgwaye Reserves will finish out of the top bracket, but should
be well pleased with the second half of their season in which they
have lost only one of their last eleven league games, winning the
other ten. On Sunday they beat Dunton Green with goals by Harry
Demmon, Dan Thomas and Tyler Markwell. Dunton Green's first season
has been up and down to say the least. Their scorer was Sam Evenden.
Speldhurst Rangers made it four wins on the trot and with their best
win of the season, a 5-0 home win against Westerham. Speldhurst
started well, Dan Sabin dispossessed a defender to leave himself one
on one with the 'keeper whom he coolly slotted past to make it 1-0.
Dan 'badger' Kelly made it 2-0 with a simple tap in. Speldhurst were
playing liquid football and almost capped off a brilliant
footballing move only for Badger to hit the underside of the bar
with an audacious lob, which had the keeper beaten all ends up. Five
minutes later Badger made amends as he put his defender on toast to
put himself through on goal. he nutmegged the onrushing keeper to
make it 3-0. Ollie Crees went close with a couple of chances.
Speldhurst were then in dreamland as Westerham, who were
unable to win a header against Crees all game, failed to win twice
allowing vital headers by Ollie Crees and Greg Gamm, the latter
claiming the assist for Joe Pursell to nod past the 'keeper.
The message at half time for Speldhurst was for them not to get
involved with Westerham's antics. Speldhurst made it 5-0 when Badger
beat the Westerham centre back yet again for him to square to Harry
Bourne, who nonchalantly opened up his body to fire into the bottom
right hand corner. Baldwin saved an effort from a corner to keep his
fourth clean sheet of the season and Speldhurst's second
consecutive clean sheet since probably dinosaurs walked the earth.
[I was asked. I have been back five seasons and found only two clean
sheets for Speldhurst Rangers in that entire time, in League and
Cup. Anyone is welcome to trawl through the archive!]
