West Kent Sunday League Report Sunday 16th April 2017

A short report once again this week, with the league programme almost complete.

WKSFL Spring Cup - Senior

Simla made sure of a place in the semi-final of the Spring Cup with two thumping wins in the space of three days.

On Thursday evening they travelled to Green Lane and came back 7-0 winners and on Sunday hosted Armada and won 8-1. They will meet Gardener's Arms next Sunday in what is bound to be a keenly contested match.

On Thursday, there were first half goals from David Blundell, Ian Parsons and Joe Fuller.   It was 3  -  0 to Simla at half time. Second half goals from David Blundell, Ian Parsons, Matt Coleman and Matt Crompton lead to a final score of final score Green Lane 0  Simla 7. Clean sheet keeper  - Joe Cullip

Sunday's game saw Simla return to their old form with an emphatic first half performance leading to a 7 - 0 half time score.

They were in front by two goals within the first three minutes through Joe Fuller and Ian Parsons, before Jon Lord scored from a left foot volley from 30 yards. Steve Smith went on to score another, before Simla were awarded a free kick just outside the penalty area which was superbly struck by Alex Carey for goal number five. Two further goals were scored in the first period, one more each for Ian Parsons and Alex Carey.

The second half was a bit quieter, with Armada defending better and Simla only scoring one more goal from Joe Fuller before Armada scored a consolation goal later on by Tom Vivian. Final score Simla 8  Armada 1

For their part, Gardener's Arms qualified with a 1-0 win at Tonbridge Origin. A tight game was settled by a first half penalty from Karl Smith after Andrew Grundy was fouled in the box.

The Division Two Champions are the surprise winners of the 'Group of Death' after successfully beating three of Division One's top four sides without conceding a goal. Goalkeeper Ben Carter kept his twelfth clean sheet of the season and is a certainty to pick up that award at the presentation evening on May 5th.

Artois United also qualified by virtue of the best runner-up position. They had to score goals and did so, beating Insulators 5-3. Artois started this game with real intent as Insulators slept through the first half. The away side took a two goal lead inside the first five minutes with Peter Shaw and Tim Maynard scoring. They added two more before half time, Bruce Sands from the spot then Jake Miller.

Looking at the prospect of a double figure defeat, Insulators put in a determined performance in the second half. Shane Blackman, making his first start of the season, pulled one back and then Ben Manser scored a fine second.  Blackman was brought down for a penalty which manager Kierron Banks scored after his first shot was well saved. Into the last 10 minutes Insulators pressed and Artois took advantage adding a fifth in injury time, that being scored by George Rodgers.

Artois United will visit Brenchley in the second semi-final on 30th April, Brenchley having already qualified as Group Three winners.

Division One

One match remains to be played, Armada v Dormansland Rockets next Sunday. An ideal 'warm-up' for Rockets as they prepare for their Surrey Lower Junior Cup final on 10th May.

Division Two

Almost the final game, in which Langton Green rounded off their season after a month without a game by beating Paddock Wood 4-1. That win lifted them from the bottom of the table. Pete Fairhurst, Charlie Sharman, Ali Gill and Inigo Martin-Quirke scored. Josh Neinricci replied for Paddock Wood.

The Division Two issues are now all decided, with the final game between Green Lane and Pembury Sunday scheduled for this coming Sunday.

Division Three

The final match of Division Three's programme saw Rusthall Club Athletic end a frustrating season with a 4-1 win at Paddock Wood Reserves. Only one point gained from their first four games cost them dearly, as they were clearly the form team towards the end of the campaign. They rounded off the season with two goals by Geoff Ashcroft, one from leading scorer Ben Johnson and one from Terry Hallett. Phil Abbott scored for Paddock Wood Reserves.
