West Kent Sunday League News Report Sunday 13th May 2018

All but one of the winners and runners-up issues is now decided. The only names that cannot yet be engraved are those of the Division Two runners-up.

Division One

Artois United sealed the runner-up spot with a 2-0 defeat of rivals Green Lane to which was added the award of three points from a match which was not played last week. Pete Shaw scored both goals in the 2-0 win at Green Lane, in goal Dave Holdstock kept his third clean sheet of the season. Green Lane's season has ended with three consecutive defeats, Artois with three wins.

Elsewhere, the Paddock Wood derby between Insulators and Paddock Wood ended in a 3-3 draw. It was an end-to-end match which you might expect from a local derby. An error in defence led to Paddock Wood taking an early lead in the sixth minute through Alex Chaplin. After about twenty minutes, a free kick from Jake Pingault was saved by the 'keeper but Martin Page-Mitchell knocked in the rebound to equalise for Insulators. On the half hour Reece Beecroft got past his man on the right and squared the ball for Jake Pingault to tap in from close range and make it 2-1. The one piece of controversy came when the Insulators 'keeper committed a foul outside the area, but the referee awarded a penalty despite being some way behind play. This was easily converted by George Bourne for a half time score of 2-2.

That seemed to give Wood the momentum in the second half and Insulators struggled for a period before Jake Pingault scored his second, again from close range. On the 75th minute the visitors equalised again, Jack Castle finding the back of the net. Both teams had another good chance in the closing stages but probably a draw was a fair result.

Division Two

Crowborough Town's hopes of second place took a nose dive at Goudhurst United. Goudhurst, who had gone four games without a win, came out 6-3 winners, the most they have scored in a game all season. And Will Mantle's name didn't feature on the scoresheet.

After the Lord Mayors Show was never more appropriate than for this fixture, from the Town point of view.

Having won the Intermediate Cup a week ago SIX of the Crowborough Town squad in that game were 'unavailable' for this fixture. Inevitably whilst those that stepped into the team gave as good as they could, some were playing out of position, some hadn't played for a long while, and they were obviously not used to playing as a team.

It was no real surprise that by half time Goudhurst had grabbed the initiative and had a three goal lead.

The second half was more promising for the visitors although Goudhurst added two more before, in the final twenty minutes, Crowborough managed to find the net three times with goals from Ollie Hyland, George Holman, and an own goal. Having brought the score to 5 - 3 it looked a little more respectable until an own goal by a Town defender gave the home their three goal advantage again. United's scorers were Michael Pearson (3), Jack Martin, Luke Young and Toby Gray.

The game between FC Grinstead and Cassidy's Phoenix was called off because of a waterlogged pitch. Summer football anyone?

Division Three

Speldhurst Rangers fell at the last fence in their title challenge and a heavy fall it was too. A 7-1 loss to Tonbridge Origin Reserves, plus the award of three points to St John's Yard in respect of an unplayed game made for a title win for St John's Yard. Rangers Ollie Crees said " Score was partly due to our end of season social being on the Saturday night and a few people missing didn't help. "

The match was played at Goldsmith's in Crowborough on possibly the best pitch that either team had seen all season. Origin expected this to be a tough fixture with Speldhurst needing a win to remain in title contention. However, rumours quickly spread that Speldhurst had enjoyed their end of season do the previous night. Which as we now know was true!

With a few sore heads, Speldhurst struggled against the Origin attack with Origin taking an early 2-0 lead.  Speldhurst then caught Origin on the break and leading scorer Jolyon Wheller scored a well taken goal to make the score 2-1 at half time. That goal turned out to be only a consolation at the end of the day. The second half was largely one sided, with Origin scoring five  goals to make the final score 7-1. Ben Holder goes to the top of the Division Three goalscorers after a haul of four on Sunday. He now has 26 for the season. Will Ashenden, Jonny Barber and Duncan Ibbotson scored the others

Origin Reserves have ended the season strongly, winning their  last five League games. They have two remaining fixtures which are both away, against Insulators Reserves and Paddock Wood Reserves. They have a good chance to finish third.
