West Kent Sunday League News Report Sunday 7th January 2018

It was not an auspicious start to 2018. Wet and very cold weather made most pitches unusable. Only four matches survived

Division One

Two of those games were in Division One. Simla travelled to Yew Tree Road to meet Armada, hoping to increase their lead over Green Lane.

Simla started brightly but it was Armada who scored first from a corner then from a penalty taken by Steve Pointing. Armad'a top scorer Harry Tampsett, with a tally so far of 15 goals and who is in cntention for the league's top goal scorer this season added a second to send Armada in 2 - 0 up at half time.

Then came an excellent performance from Simla in the second half who dominated the play.

Simla were awarded a penalty early in the half which helped to revive their confidence, this was converted by David Blundell. From then on it was all Simla with wave after wave of attacking play and again it was Armada keeper, James Larkin, who pulled off some crucial saves to prevent them from scoring. Eventually they did equalise from a free kick on the edge of the penalty area through a superb shot from Bayley Colbran. Then it was left to Ian Parsons to score the winner with five minutes to play. Final score Armada 2  Simla 3.

Meanwhile, Artois United picked up a welcome three points after three games without a win in League or Cup. But it was a narrow 2-1 over Tonbridge Origin in the Tonbridge Farm derby game. Nathan Moseley and Ayrton Phillips scored the all-important goals. Rory Catt replied for Origin.

Division Three

Speldhurst Rangers' hopes of the title took a slight knock when they were defeated 4-3 by Tonbridge United at Tonbridge Farm. It was their first loss in the League since the opening day of the season. But it is still tight at the top as you can see below, with only four points separating the top four teams, with each one having played exactly half their league fixtures. As for United, that result makes it four games now since their last defeat.

'A forgettable performance' says our man from Speldhurst. Sloppy finishing and passing was punished by Tonbridge United, who looked dead and buried when Speldhurst had gone into a two nil lead. However the wind and some good finishing got them into half time at 2-2.

The second half was equally as squalid (from the Rangers point of view!) and not one for the neutral. United ran out winners in what was a bad day for the so called title challengers. United's top scorers Reece Dangerfield (2) and Alex Underdown did the damage, with the first being being scored by Stephen Parsons. Josh Fermor, Joe Hearndon and James Ryan found the net for Rangers.
