West Kent Sunday League Report – Sunday 19th February 2017

With some teams now having finished their League prorgramme and with many others having just one or two games remaining, the League will be running its Spring Cup competition this season. It will be split into Senior and Junior Sections. The setup will be available in a day or two.

We are almost there in terms of known who will take this season's trophies, although Division Two will go down to perhaps the last game.

Surrey Lower Junior Cup Quarter Final

Dormansland Rockets have reached the semi-final of the Surrey Lower Junior Cup after gaining a huge ten-nil win at Leatherhead based side Dundonald. Top scorer Rich Wetton scored six of them, Matt Burroughs two, Shane Clarabutt and Miguel Dunne one each. Club Secretary Peter Elwood wishes he could get the same from his outfit for league matches!

Division One

Artois United ended their truncated League fixture list with an 8-1 win at Goudhurst United. That gives Simla the task of gaining five points from their final three matches to retain their title. Artois scorers: Tim Maynard 3, George Rogers 2, Josh Marshall, Jake Fairweather and Sam Baker got the eighth. Rolling back the years to score the final goal with a stunning individual goal a week after his 39th birthday. A screamer!! Will Mantle scored Goudhurst's only goal. Today's useless fact is that Artois United have had twenty different goalscorers this season!

Simla kept pace with the leaders after a narrow 4-3 win at Armada. It was a good game for the neutral observer. Although Simla had many chances in the first half, they struggled to get the ball past the Armada keeper James Larkin. Armada on the other hand went two goals up. Simla eventually pulled one back through Clayton Cooper only for Armada to score again from the kick off. It was 3 - 1 to the hosts at half time, Ben Renshaw having scored twice and Keith McCormack the other.

For the first 25 minutes of the second half it looked not to be Simla's day, with numerous attempts just off target or well saved by Larkin. Then it all changed, with three goals from Simla, including one from Steve Smith. Armada missed the chance to equalise just before the final whistle so final score was Armada 3  Simla 4. Simla and Armada will be soon meeting again, the WKSFL Senior Cup semi-final

Simla's final three League games are Tonbridge Origin (H), Dormansland Rockets (A) and Insulators (A) - none of them a given.

Insulators recovered from last week's defeat with a 4-1 win at home to TW Foresters. James Philpott scored twice for the hosts, Dan Taylor and Andy Tarling the others. Taylor Galvin scored for Foresters.

Division Two

Gardener's Arms were held at home by Green Lane, Pembury Sunday won at SE Spitfires and it's almost neck and neck at the final two fences.

Gardener's Arms will bemoan no doubt the loss of two points against Green Lane. The Lane have been improving, having lost only one of their last seven WKSFL matches in League and Cup. Karl Smith, Brad Moon and Stuart Crush scored for Gardener's, a double from Josh Harris and one from James Knight made up the Lane's tally.

Pembury Sunday went to bottom side SE Spitfirfes knowing that a win was essential to keep them in the title hunt. They came home after a 2-1 victory, with the club and division's top scorer Steve Harper bagging one of them, Mark Wyles the other.

The Fixtures Secretary has no doubt pencilled in a date for what could be the title decider at Woodside, Pembury v Gardener's Arms.  Their first meeting was a 0-0 draw. Both teams have one other match to play. Pembury's other game is at Green Lane, which could be hard work, while Gardener's go to Cassidy's Phoenix.

In the other game, Hawkenbury Sunday recorded only their third league win of the season, defeating Brenchley 3-2. The bottom half of the division has a kind of mini-league look about it, with only four points separating the five teams.  Hawks goalscorers were Natt Paine, James Prentis and Frankie Fuller, Steve Marsh scored both for Brenchley.

Division Three

Rusthall Club Athletic continued their march up the table. With five games left, they will get runners up spot if they win all of them. They kept on that road with a 4-1 win at home against Paddock Wood Reserves. Ben Johnson followed up last week's five goal haul with one of them, also on the scoring list were Jamie Law, James Scott and Geoff Ashcroft.

Green Street Blues drew level on points with Crowborough Town when they made it four wins in a row at Speldhurst Rangers. Matt Heathcote, Chris Harragin and Shaun Boyle scored the important goals for the Blues, for Rangers the goals were from Ollie Crees and a screamer from Joe Hearnden. Rangers' highly frustrating season comes to an end, with the figures showing that of their defeats six of them have been by just the one goal.

Next week's game between Green Street Blues and Rusthall Club will go a very long way towards determining who will receive the runners-up trophies.

St John's Yard have found some form and in their final game made it show with a 3-1 win at Tonbridge Invicta. All the goals were scored in the first half. The Yard scored in the first five minutes of the game, a tap in for Josh Lincoln. Rory Wilson scored the second, then Invicta pulled one back through Ashleigh Craft.  Rory Wilson soon restored Yard's two goal lead. The second half was 0 - 0 with resolute defending required from the visitors. Wilson's two goals won him the man of the match award.

Division Four

Not quite all over but the fat lady is no doubt warming up. TW Foresters Reserves need just a draw at rivals FC Grinstead next Sunday to secure the title, a win for Grinstead would make the final games interesting!

Both sides recorded big home wins on Sunday. Foresters crushed FC Hayward 7-2 with Simon Hammond getting four of them. Harry Hickmott hit the back of the net twice and the seventh was scored by Ash Collins. Hayward have failed this season to take any points from the top two. With two games left they look like finishing third.

FC Grinstead had to play 'keeper Harvey James out on the field owing to an injured hand. Top scorer Charly Harris had to go in goal. It didn't seem to matter as they demolished Insulators Reserves 6-0 to all but end the latter's hopes of trophies. Instead of Harris, the goals came from Alex Mason, George Moody, Connor Tobin, two from Chris Neatherway and Harvey James, who played the final 20 minutes up front and scored the sixth and final goal with a penalty. That was his sixth goal of the season. And while we are looking at useless facts, Grinstead have had twenty-one different scorers this season!

To round off the day, Tonbridge Origin Reserves and TW Ridgewaye drew two-all at Tonbridge Farm. Levi Caruana and an own goal for Origin's two, Richard Hill and Ben Adams for Ridgewaye. For Ridgewaye, this was the lowest scoring total goal tally (four) in their last nine games. The average scored, by them and their opponents, in the previous eight was 8.125.
